Alice Gray Stites is Chief Curator and Director of Art Programming for 21c Museum Hotels. 21c Museum is North America’s first museum dedicated solely to collecting and exhibiting art of the 21st century. Stites works closely with 21c founders and collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson to bring works of art to the public through innovative exhibitions and programs that integrate contemporary art into daily life. Stites curates exhibitions and organizes other events and projects at 21c Museum in Louisville, and oversees art installations and programming at all 21c MuseumHotels in development. Since January 2012, Stites has curated six exhibitions at 21c Museum: Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea, Ann Hamilton: book weights, Consuming Cultures: A Global View, Blue: Matter, Mood, and Melancholy, Convergence: Highlights from the Collection 2012, and Stitching Identity: Fantasy, Ritual, and Realism in Female Imagery. Stites organized the inaugural exhibitions for 21c Cincinnati and 21c Bentonville, and commissions of site-specific installations in all 21c locations.

Alice Gray Stites also serves as director of artwithoutwalls, a non-profit, site-specific public art organization dedicated to bringing new art to new audiences. Since 2009, artwithoutwalls has engaged artists from around the world, including Serkan Ozkaya, E.V. Day, Brent Green, Stefan Sagmeister, Chris Doyle, Shih Chieh Huang, George Legrady, Mark Shepard, Daan Roosegaarde, and others, on collaborative projects with Louisville Courier-Journal, the US Embassy, Stockholm, Idea Festival, and more.

From 1995 to 2005, Stites was adjunct curator of contemporary art at the Speed Art Museum, where she organized numerous exhibitions, including The Theatre of Self-Invention: Self-Portraiture in Contemporary Art; The Body in Question; Mary Ann Currier: Contemplating the Contemporary Still Life, and many others. As an independent curator, Stites also organized exhibitions at the University of Kentucky Art Museum and at 21c Museum Louisville, where she curated the inaugural exhibitions in 2006, Hybridity: The Evolution of Species and Spaces in Contemporary Art and Looking Now.
